Arabic-Speaking Markets

Arabic is spoken by more than 400 million people in over 20 countries. An overview of the main markets, the Arabic each one reads, and how to reach them.

The Arab world is not one market. Customers in Riyadh, Cairo, Beirut and Casablanca share a written language, but they differ in everyday dialects, business languages, buying habits and cultural references. Getting the language right for each market is the first step to being trusted there.

I help companies of every size, from startups to multinationals, enter Arabic-speaking markets with translation, localization and digital marketing that fit each audience, translating directly from English, French and Spanish.

The main markets

The Gulf

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. High purchasing power and fast digital adoption. English is common in business, but consumers and institutions expect careful Modern Standard Arabic, with a Gulf tone for local marketing.

The Levant

Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Highly educated, multilingual audiences; English, and French in Lebanon, are common in business. Modern Standard Arabic for written content, Levantine Arabic for informal marketing and video.

Egypt

The most populous Arab country and a large consumer market. Egyptian Arabic is understood across the region thanks to film and TV, while Modern Standard Arabic remains the norm for written and official content.

The Maghreb

Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. Darija is the everyday language, French is widely used in business in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, and Modern Standard Arabic dominates official writing and the media.

Iraq

A large market with growing demand for services. Modern Standard Arabic for written content and Iraqi Arabic for informal communication; Kurdish is also an official language, mainly in the Kurdistan Region.

Questions about Arabic markets

Do I need a different Arabic version for each country?

Usually not. One version written in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is understood in all Arabic-speaking countries, from Morocco to the Gulf, and works for websites, apps, documents and most marketing. Separate country versions make sense mainly for campaigns, social media and video aimed at one market, or where local terms differ, for example for products, units or legal references. Start with MSA, then localize the content closest to the customer.

Is English enough to do business in the Gulf?

English is common in many business contacts, but consumers, public institutions and many decision-makers expect Arabic. Content in good Arabic widens your reach and builds trust.

Can you help companies from French- or Spanish-speaking countries?

Yes. I translate directly from French and Spanish into Arabic, without going through English, and I advise on the markets that matter most for your sector.
